What to wear when running in winter

If you want to maintain your training efforts during winter, you must dress appropriately to prevent your performance from being hindered. Striking the balance between keeping your extremities warm with suitable breathability to ensure you don’t overheat is key. Below, we list each item we’d recommend to keep up your running practice regardless of cold, wet and windy weather.

A base layer top

A moisture-wicking, long-sleeved base layer top can help to keep sweat away from your skin, which in winter helps to prevent a chill and conserve heat. The compression of a base layer also works to support your muscles, keeping you warm which can aid in injury prevention. Opt for a base layer that offers ventilation features so that once you’ve warmed up, you have the added breathability.

Waterproof running shoes

A pair of waterproof running shoes ensures your feet remain dry and comfortable while you run, no matter whether it’s raining or snowing. Running shoes with GORE-TEX are especially good for this, as they keep your feet dry while still allowing for breathability. This helps to prevent blisters and discomfort that can be caused by friction between the skin and wet material. Consider running shoes with good traction too, to ensure you’re kept stable when running on slippery ground. Pair with moisture-wicking socks for optimum performance.

Weather resistant jacket

A windproof, weather-resistant running jacket is the key to comfortable exercise through the winter months. Opt for a jacket with ventilation panels to ensure you don’t overheat, and look for additional features such as pockets and storage to keep any tech you carry dry.

Long tights and track pants

Thermal, winter running tights can provide added insulation to keep you warm while supporting the muscles through compression technology. Wear these beneath a pair of weather-resistant track pants and you’ve got the ideal combination to run without the weather negatively impacting your running ability.

Running hat and gloves

Protect the sensitive areas of the ears and fingers from biting chill when running with a suitable hat and pair of gloves. A fitted running beanie provides compression and ensures wind isn’t able to irritate the ears. Opt for a weather-resistant pair of gloves, again GORE-TEX fabrics are a great choice, to protect your hands from wind and rain.

High-visibility running gear

With the dark mornings and early evenings of winter, it’s likely your running session will be during the hours that lack daylight. To keep yourself safe, invest in high-visibility gear such as a vest and head torch, so you can see where you're going and alert road users to your presence.
