When we run our feet are constantly coming into contact with hard surfaces. To reduce the level of shock and impact exerted on them, which often results in injury, our feet naturally roll into the motion: this is called pronation. The inward roll assists with shock absorption and is part of the natural running movement. The amount of roll varies for everyone, but people who have too much roll are over-pronators and usually require a structured support shoe to counteract the excessive rolling and less effective shock absorption.
