Great North Run 2025 Round Up

The Great North Run weekend has once again proved why it’s one of the UK’s most iconic running events. This year we were right at the heart of the action, from our shake-out run before the big day, to our flagship store providing runners with a place to grab all of their running essentials, to cheering runners along the route at the Brooks cheer zone. From providing Puma footwear and clothing for the Run for Drew team attempting record-breaking fetes, to watching a team of passionate runners racing for Sunday for Sammy, this year we teamed up with some incredible partners and athletes to make this race weekend one to remember.

With over 60,000 runners taking to the streets, Sunday’s half marathon brought all the energy, with help from people all across the UK coming to cheer on the runners. Keep reading as we recap the standout performances from this year's Great North Run, including the top three men’s and women’s finishers from Sunday’s race, celebrating the achievements of every runner who made this weekend unforgettable.

Great North Run Shake-Out Run

On Saturday, we kicked things off with the Brooks x Start Fitness x Runna Shake-Out Run, welcoming runners to loosen up and soak up the pre-race buzz ahead of Sunday’s half marathon. This event included an easy 5km run through the city led by a Runna coach, giving runners the chance to stretch it out and get ready for the big day. We were lucky to have Ashley Cain in attendance, who brought his infectious enthusiasm and energy, and provided us all with his words of wisdom.

As well as offering those taking part receiving the chance to try on the latest shoes from Brooks, attendees had the opportunity to shop exclusive offers post-run at our special Start Fitness in-store event.

With special guests, goodybags and giveaway prizes to be won, this event was the perfect way to start the weekend and give runners a chance to connect with others taking part in the race.

Along with our epic Brooks cheering zone at mile 12, this year we were also proud to back many wonderful individuals and organisations taking part in the race including, Drew Graham’s Guinness World Record attempt in partnership with PUMA, and the wonderful team of runners running for Sunday for Sammy.

Run with Drew - Gym Possible

A challenge that generated huge attention and inspired keen running enthusiasts everywhere, Drew’s World Record achievement was an inspiring show of determination and teamwork. With six incredible friends pushing Drew in his wheelchair through the full half marathon distance in 01:18:02, this set the World Record for the fastest half marathon pushing a wheelchair by a team.

Showcasing the power of friendship, willpower and inclusivity, this incredible achievement showed what’s possible for people of all abilities. All fundraising proceeds from this achievement will go to Drew’s charity, Gym Possible that aims to break barriers and prove anyone can do what they set out to achieve.

Sunday for Sammy

A dedicated squad of ten runners tackled the 13.1 mile course to raise £25,000 for this incredible charity on Sunday. Marking the 25th anniversary of the beloved show which was originally established in memory of the late North East actor, this team brought together performers, musicians, entrepreneurs and local creatives, to support bursaries for aspiring young talent.

Actor Lisa McGrillis took to the start line alongside fellow actor James Baxter, musician Matt Saxon, songwriter Ben Harwood, comedian Micky Cochrane, entrepreneur Ben Griffin, and endurance runner Ian McAllister. Alongside these famous faces, family connections to Sammy who completed this team included grandson Nathan Hayes and Victoria Johansen.

The funds raised went towards supporting twelve Sunday for Sammy bursaries at Gateshead College’s new Level 4 Creative Enterprise Diploma, giving talented young creatives the chance to follow their dreams. All of the money raised goes towards covering costs such as travel, equipment and essential software, to break down barriers and help support young people wanting to enter this creative industry.
