North East Running Events: The Blaydon Race

It’s not just a race, it’s a tradition.

Steeped in North East tradition and bursting with proper Geordie pride, there’s honestly nothing quite like the Blaydon Races. This legendary road race is one of the region’s most iconic running events, bringing locals and visitors together to take part in a cracking race and celebrate everything that makes the North East so special. With the sound of the famous tune belting out at the start line and crowds lining the streets in support, the Blaydon Races is a day you won’t forget in a hurry.

Since the first race in 1981, thousands of runners hit the streets every year on the 9th of June to keep the heart of Tyneside’s history alive. It doesn’t matter whether you’re chasing a new PB, or just fancy a canny jog with a brilliant atmosphere, the Blaydon Race is a race for everyone. Keep reading as we uncover the history of this iconic event, the ground it covers and how you can get involved.

What is the story behind the Blaydon Races?

Believe it or not, the Blaydon Races began as a horse race way back in 1811, where local Keelmen performed a sword dance at local villages to raise money for horse race prizes and teamed up with a travelling village fun fair, The Hoppings. This big social gathering took place where Blaydon Railway Station is now situated, but came to an end in 1835 when the station was created.

Fast forward to 1861, and the races made a comeback, putting it on the British Racing Calendar. The 1-mile-long circular track was created on Blaydon Island, situated between Blaydon, on the south bank, and Newburn Haugh, on the north bank. The infamous song ‘The Blaydon Races’ written by local legend George ‘Geordie’ Ridley, was first performed that year at the Mechanics' Hall in Blaydon. The event was a huge hit and kept going strong until the early 1900s, even though the races themselves eventually fizzled out. The song, however, stuck around and became a Tyneside anthem, and you’ll still hear it today belted out at St James' Park on matchdays!

Finally, in 1981, Dr James Dewar of Blaydon Harriers and Athletics Club resurrected The Blaydon Race as an athletics road race covering 5.9 miles from Newcastle to Blaydon. Taking place still on the 9th June, this road race follows the route as spoken in the iconic song, as best it can. The first race saw 212 local athletes attend and has since grown in popularity each year, with now 5,000 available spots eagerly awaiting to be taken every year.

What is the route for the Blaydon Race?

The Blaydon Race covers 5.9 miles, kicking off on Newcastle’s Quayside before heading along Scotswood Road (just like in the song). You’ll pass iconic local spots like Armstrong’s Factory and cross over Scotswood Bridge, before making your way into Blaydon Town for a finish on the fields.

There’s a proper buzz along the route with local bands, entertainers, and crowds of supporters cheering you on every step of the way. It’s one of those races where the atmosphere carries you as much as your legs do.
