Possibly the best cushioned shoe you’ll ever run in

I normally run on roads but have got the trail bug recently, after reading 100s of reviews and buying Hoka challenger wides (too big) and Salomon Ultra Glides (too narrow) I decided to revert to Saucony whos road shoes I love but aren’t exactly a major trail player.

Firstly I hardly found any reviews on the xodus range full stop, let alone this 11th version. Clearly in the past the weight has been an issue which I assume has led to reviewers bypassing it, or Saucony focussing on the new endorphin trail meaning the xodus has gone under the radar.

Secondly I should say I am no high tech trail or ultra runner, I am bang average and mostly do 6 milers, sometimes more but 10 is my max at the mo.

First impressions of the xodus 11 was like putting a big winter glove on my foot, super comfy from top to bottom, if a little bulky. Compared to the ultra glides (comical they are marketed as the same width!) these have bags of room, maybe a little too much actually in the toe box, I’m a 10 in Saucony but wouldn’t mind just trying these in a 9.5, too late never mind, they have the room for feet swelling when I do get more miles done.

I am a road to trail runner most of the time, with trails being canal tow path, tight packed dirt and bits of forest, so need something that’s well cushioned to save my shins.

Well no worries here! These are probably the best cushioned shoe I’ve ever run in. By best I don’t mean softest but I experience zero shin pain with these even on road but they also give loads back, the rock plate I guess adds to the firmness but there is a spring to them which is appreciated given the weight.

Upper comfort is amazing, as I said glove like, which might be a tad too much. I think they could reduce some of the padding and save a bit of weight but being picky there. The ultra glide printed overlays are ridiculously harsh on my feet and give me blisters but these have the perfect amount, not even mild irritation, a delight.

Laces and lockdown is typical saucony, nice tight fit. I do get a tad of heel slip on my right foot but that’s because it’s smaller than my left, the left is perfect.

Outsole feels like digger tracks are on your feet, indestructible, loads of grip but with some snap and flex too. Amazingly you actually feel a bit of the trail through them.

General build quality is pretty faultless. I think I might perish before these do!

Styling wise I find them a bit fussy, some weird white printed bits on the yellow mesh make the shoe look faded out the box which is odd, wish these came in some of the colours of the peregrine but no big deal.

Only draw back is the inevitable; they never shrink around your feet. They are simply too meaty for that but the cushioning is so good my legs feel far fresher after a run in these than others. If you’re an ultra or advanced runner I think the chunkiness is going to be an issue, normal runners like me are just going to love the ride so much they won’t care.

IMO this is a massively underrated, under talked about shoe that is more than you need unless you’re elite. If they could shave some weight off and make it a little snugger around the toes it would be perfect IMO.
