Weighing in at just 36 grams, the PACE 2 is one of the lightest smartwatches on the market. However, the low profile design does not limit the power on offer; it uses a 1.5 times more powerful processor, five times more RAM and four times more internal storage compared to the original PACE watch. These improvements mean your training plans will load quicker, and you will get less lag when processing post-workout data. More memory also means you can afford to sync the watch less if you are out on big training sessions or multi-day excursions.
The redesign of the PACE 2 has also led to optimised button ergonomics. Instead of the old five-button style, COROS has added a "digital crown"; a scrollable button that works similarly to the popular Apple watch. You can now scroll through Coros's menus using this wheel and press it down to select an option. This makes cycling through routes and workouts a breeze and means you can start working out faster.
Battery life of the PACE 2 is also excellent. A redesign of the COROS GPS battery technology means the PACE 2 offers 30 hours of full GPS battery life - a 20% increase from the original PACE. If you need the battery to last even longer, you can switch to the UltraMax setting that cuts battery consumption in half. For non-GPS use, the PACE 2 offers 20 days battery; that time includes constant functions like tracking heart rate and sleep, triggering the backlight, measuring your steps, getting smart notifications and even your daily alarms.
For those that like to train at night, COROS has specced a powerful dark mode that auto activates depending on the time of day. The backlight will stay on for the entirety of your workout at a level bright enough for your eyes to see but dim enough to not wear down the battery. Night mode will turn off when your workout is finished or one hour after sunrise. With a 50-metre water resistance rating, the PACE 2 works just as well in the water as it does on land.
The PACE 2 goes beyond the standard run, bike or swim metrics you see on most smartwatches; a few examples include the Strength Training mode, accurate track specific running and a flat water swimming mode. The Strength Training feature alone has over 200 exercises programmed to target all your muscle groups. When you are done exercising, it can show you a muscle heatmap via the mobile app, highlighting exactly which muscles you have been working. When you use the Track Run feature, the PACE 2 switches to a proprietary algorithm that records workouts accurately regardless of which lane you choose. Where competing watches might show you random zigzags across the track, or irregular sharp turns, the PACE 2 shows you smooth straights and corners lap after lap.
